Remarks on Enteric Fever in India, with the Details of Two Fatal Cases in Which Diarrhœa Was Absent Throughout

y The cases hereafter detailed are taken from the case-books of the 1-14 P. W. O. Regiment, and present several features of interest. It is remarkable that they are the two last cases that occurred in the regiment, and that though alike in the absence of diarrhoea, one was treated in the plains, and the second in the hills. In neither case was there any evidence of impure water having been drunk, the usual precautions being in force in barracks, the sanitation of which was as nearly perfect as possible. It is true that the first case was treated at Eenares, in the native city of which sanitary conditions are probably as unfavourable as in any city of India : still enteric fever is not more prevalent in the Benares cantonment than in other stations where the native city is more under hygienic control. The second case arose four months after the first, at Ranikhet, within a few days of the arrival of the regiment: this patient came from Sitapore and had no communication with the first.
